Let's start with pupillary distance. Have your patient look straight ahead while you rest the Unity® Personalization Key in the middle of their nose bridge. Then, simply measure the pupillary distance.

Next, let's talk about vertex distance. Place the end of the key right where the pupil starts and measure to the back of the frame. It's that simple.

Pantoscopic Tilt

Wrap

The Challenges of Early Progressives

Progressive lenses have evolved significantly since their introduction in 1959, when the biggest challenge facing lens designers was how to provide the desired add power without lines and ledges. Another shortcoming was the inability to create separate right and left designs, resulting in a lens profile that was exactly alike. Most designs were difficult for patients to adapt to due to the narrower working zones. Other issues disrupted the overall binocular focus and peripheral astigmatism, resulting in many patients complaining of swim and blur, and further increased the high non-adapt rates.

Fitting these progressives properly was also a challenge. While opticians typically focused on corridor length, early progressive lens options were based on fitting heights. This caused confusion since corridor length does not equate to fitting height. Only standard long corridor or a compact, short corridor lenses were available. Unfortunately, short corridor designs often delivered poor peripheral acuity, inadequate intermediate utility, excessive image swim, and insufficient reading comfort.

The consequence of limited options, paired with the complexity of fixed-corridor designs frequently resulted in visual compromises:

InnoVue Technology – A Customized Approach to Expanded Vision

As of October 11, Unity® Via II is now the best and only option for Unity Progressive Lenses.

One of the most persistent challenges of progressive lenses has been the inherent astigmatism aberrations, which are intrinsic features in the lenses’ surface. A progressive lens always has astigmatism aberration in the periphery, which is perceived by the wearer as blurriness; it also distorts shapes so that straight lines appear twisted or curved. The latter effect may disrupt depth perception, causing a swimming sensation.

Expanding the View, Personally

Although astigmatism aberration cannot be entirely eliminated, it can be reduced to some extent. When Unity Via progressives were first introduced, peripheral astigmatism was decreased to very low levels compared to other progressive lenses on the market. The astigmatism was directed radially away from the lens’ center to where it could do the least harm. This approach is still being used in new Unity Via® II lenses.

InnoVue technology is our latest advancement in lens design, one that significantly reduces the area of objectionable astigmatism. A combination of improved mathematics and software used in Unity Via Plus II and Unity Via Elite II lenses achieves even lower levels of astigmatism, reducing wearer’s sensation of blur and swim. This is possible due to the individual optimization available in these lenses, which takes into account the frame shape, fitting height, and wearer’s individual pupillary distance[1].

It’s a fact of modern society that we’re all spending more time in front of digital screens at work, home and play. While handheld devices were the dominant device a few years ago (requiring close viewing at the visual center-line), we’ve evolved our usage to encompass numerous screens simultaneously, including laptops, tablets, TVs, video gaming consoles, and more. A new term was even coined “second screening” to describe this phenomenon, where television watchers use a secondary digital device, such as a smartphone or tablet, at the same time. This multi-screen connectivity poses unique visual challenges for presbyopes.

Enhanced Visual Acuity and Comfort in a Digital World

A multi-device lifestyle requires eyewear that emphasizes the near- and intermediate-near areas of vision to provide greater comfort, while minimizing eyestrain when engaging with these devices. In the past, a combination of short progression and lateral falloff of addition power in progressives made the area of useful intermediate vision rather small. This forced progressive lens wearers using multiple devices to make frequent horizontal and vertical head movements, often leading to fatigue, muscle pain, and an overall frustrating visual experience.

OptiScreen Technology pushes addition power up and out without increasing peripheral aberrations, allowing expanded areas of intermediate addition power to provide clearer viewing of screens in any configuration. As a result, wearers no longer need to turn their head and/or reposition the device to see screens clearly. OptiScreen also reduces the need for wearers to awkwardly adjust their posture and movements, ensuring an easier and more comfortable viewing experience[1].
